I had a standard clutch cable in my Mk1 which had a 1.8 driver engine and box and it was fine

I have since fitted an ABF and used the same cable without issue but then fitted a caddy cable so as to run around the back of the engine and this turns very sharply out of the bulkhead and is fine also.

Both were from GSF, both were manual adjusted types and both had minimal lubrication.

What I recommend is to lubricate the cable with gearbox or engine oil.

Hold the top so the gearbox end of the cable is at the top and the cable is vertical and straight and dribble oil in it and work the cable backwards and forwards.

Heavy or sticky cables can be the bulkhead is failing where the cable exits behind the clutch pedal or rusty or part broken cables within the outer guide.

Finally, when the cable is off, check the play/action in the clutch pedal pivot, it should be a little floppy and the pedal should move without any resistance. If its worn badly it will side load the pins and make it a bit harder.

Also, remove the cable from the gearbox and see if the cable guide hole has been worn by the cable. If the cable steady is not used this can see the cable sawing through the gearbox. While its off see if the clutch arm on the gearbox drops and is not stiff or listen closely when it is on and feel the arm for grooaning or vibration which might indicate a sticky release mechanism within the gearbox.
