How? how? how? do i remove the speedo cable?

Hi everyone,

How the smoke do i remove the speedo cable? i've taken the bracket off and seen a little silver type plate in the gearbox and had a little fiddle but don't want to go forcing things out. I've tried pulling directly up and it seems like it's attached to a small cow down there (Really hard to move). Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Alex

The "I've tried pulling directly up and it seems like it's attached to a small cow down there" bit made me laugh mate.

Can't speak for everyone but I heaved on my speedo cable whilst rotating it and it popped out.  Not sure if you've seen the end of one before but… its got a long cog with twisting teeth.  What you're experiencing is this cog trying to turn the gears so that it free's itself… quite a task.  I may be wrong but a seriously hard pull and twist worked for me.  :dontknow:

They always get covered in grime/etc and/or rust in, so it needs the plate levering off the gearbox, then it pops out. Levering it is quite tricky due to the access. I know what you mean about how hard it is to pull. I've lifted gearboxes using the supposedly detached speedo cable before. Spudfingers you were lucky!

Is there any technique which won't leave it still in the gears mate?  Mine was tight but manageable  :dontknow:

Do you mean leave the cog in the gearbox? That cog should be attached reasonably firmly to the speedo cable, and come out with it, with an expansion circlip.

What's the expansion circlip as need to check mine when putting it back in mate?

Its a circlip on the cable which expands to hold the cog firmly on.

I think these cogs only fall off when people tug at the cables, to remove…..

I had the same problem. I was more afraid of dropping the cog in the gearbox than destroying cable assembly.
My solution was to tap a sharpened, and very strong, screwdriver between the rim of the metal cup (=the silver metal plate) and the gearbox housing and then start working it out. It did leave some scratches on the cup but I got it cleaned up pretty good.
It took the better part of a day because of the limited access. I worked from underneath, but had a couple of mirrors placed above the area so I could see where I placed the screwdriver.

Just keep going at it and you will win in the end.
