Clutch Confusion- Frankenstein Golf!

Hello all,

Right so, when i got my golf (cheap from a mate. he had some work done to it (needed a new engine) which he told me was replaced with a 2.0l mk2 golf although hes pretty usless with these things i have no paper work for it… looking at the engine code is a DZ which actually looks to be a 1.8 audi 80 stort (more or less the same as the original DX engine from it.)

Can anyone confirm?
anyone know if the performance is the same / better from these?

i assumed the gearbox was either from this or from the original car… seems not. had the gear box off and the clutch, i bought a new one from GSF. didnt fit.  :dontknow:

turns out the new clutch has 24 spline teeth and mine has 28… a little search on google and it looks like mine might of come from a mk2?

can anyone confirm this? did the mk2 have the same 020 gear box?

all the seals i bought for it for the original gearbox did fit fine.

back to my original problem… initially the clutch was very stiff. the clutch only disangaged when my foot was almost through the floor. when i tried to adjust it it was slightly better  but clicked as the engine turned over when depressing the clutch.

after taking the clutch off the release bearing was in pieces . Could this be the cause of all my problems? anyone had a similar experience.

my question is my clutch, which i thought needed replacing, actually seems in pretty good condition (see picture) now that iv gone to the hassle of taking the gear box off, would it be worth changing the clutch anyway? dont want to spend the money if not needed but is there anything that could be wrong with it contributing to these problems described or are they that simple it must just be the release bearing? just not liking the thought of taking it back off again.

also whilst its off is it worth changing the main crankshaft seal? heard this is recommended.

could the mk2 clutch/gearbox conversion be causing any problems?

Sorry for the long post.
