What type of 5spd?

And by 4spd, do you mean early 1600 gti 4spd or 1300 Driver 4spd?

4 + E? Should be a 4-speed originally  :?

Sounds like someone before you already made the upgrade to a 5-speed in which case there should not be a problem!

4+E

I used to run 4+e gearbox`s in my 5 door GX but after breaking 3 of them with the 150-160 bhp i switched to the mk 2 5 speed box ,although i miss the 155mph top end which could be reached the 4+e did have a very nice cruising feel to it . :)

If you got a 4+e as said above, it is basically a 5spd, so the linkages should fit the other five speed box.

Before you even start though you want to check out the codes on the boxes and compare them to these charts:

http://www.nwlink.com/~vdb/vw/Transmission/speed-ratio.html
VW 020 5-Speed Transaxle Ratio Chart

This will help you work out if the boxes have different ratios or not.
You also need to ask yourself why you want to change. If it is shorter ratios you are after, check out the links above to see which are the short ratio boxes.

Hope they help - they sure helped me!

Well I got a 9a (Campaign) box in mine and it is one of the short ratio varieties. I have to say it is not the best for cruising! at 70MPH the car sits between 3500 and 4000 rpm! I do have lower profile tyres than standard which reduces the overall gearing a bit too.

If you want a box for motorway cruising, you want an 1800 Gti 5spd box.
Check the codes of any boxes you find against those links I posted, just to be sure!
