14" BBS rims on a MK1

I researched it and decided that I could fit these BBS rims and tyres on my standard GTi (not lowered, stiffened etc)
195/65/R14

I was wrong. They rub. Sometimes. One the slowest of left turns. I'm not sure where but I think it's the top of the wheel arch - since it's ripped the kerb side spat off  :oops: that's a little dramatic but it's pulled the top rivet's out so I had to remove it. The wing is really rusty anyway so it didn't take much - it's on my list of things to do so I'm not too worried. When I can get the screws out of the rusty bits that are still attached to the spat I'll patch it up so it looks nice until I get restoring proper. Very occasionally I've heard the rears rub - think it's the top wheel arch but could be the lip.

Further research has lead me to believe that I need 55 profile tyres - that'll bring the radius down so they stop rubbing and the speedo will read near correct.
195/55/R14's tyres don't exist - or are as rare as rocking horse poo. I've been told my Kingsway tyres that I can fit 185/55/R14 to the same rim and I'll be fine. Avon's @ ?48 a corner doesn't seem too bad - tho e-tyres lists some mid-range for ?44. Before I splash out can someone confirm that all will be right with the world if I fit them - Wifey will not be happy if I spend more money and it's wrong :twisted:

So, I wish to go from the original tarantula R13's that are;
175/70/R13 on ET38, 5 1/2J x 13H2

to these BBS's that are;
184/55/R14 on ET30, 6 1/2J x 14H2

- I'll change the BMW center caps one I know I'm not throwing money away.

Looking at http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html I should be OK - ET30 with 185's gives me;
"The edge of the new tyre will be 3mm further away from the inside of the wheel well and suspension components, and 13mm further out from the edge of the bodywork."
Rather than ET30 with 195;
"The edge of the new tyre will be 2mm closer to the inside of the wheel well and suspension components, and 18mm further out from the edge of the bodywork."

Thanks for your help,

Keith

Running through the car bible tyre size calculator again for 185's I'll need 60 profile tyres to keep the raduis the same.
It's very confusing - I can't understand how the width can affect the raduis. I think this is where I went wrong in the first place. 175/65/R14 would have been OK.  :banghead:
Price wise the tyres are about the same and available unlike the 195/55''s.

The width affects the diameter because the second number is the percentage of the width that the side wall is high. I hope that makes some sense.  :)

So if one tyre is 205 wide and one is 175 wide, both with 65's, then the wide tyre will be bigger round, 65% of 205 is more than 65% of 175.

yeah get rid o the ballon tyres and you should be ok!  worst case hammer the lip of the arches and chop out a bit of the plastic trims to give you more room. as you say the arches are rusty anyway so give em death :lol:
