—————

Today I bought an X reg 1.6 GTi 3 door non-sunroof series 2 Mk1, It was originally Mars Red until someone did a questionable spray job to make it a weird dark green colour. It is totally solid, no rust or corrosion apart from the N/S arch which has been welded but not finished. There might be more, but I'm not sure yet! The spare wheel well is perfect too. It is currently sitting on an old set of coil overs and has a Mk2 2.0 16v lump in it (Literally just the block and head nothing else!). All the panels are in good condition but there are a few dents here and there as you should expect; I'm not sure how it has survived having had 9 owners! I'm the 10th.

Over the next few months/years I plan to restore it and modify it with an OEM+ feel, I'm 21 and currently at Loughborough Uni studying industrial design. This isn't my first time toying with cars, although its my first stab at a full on restoration! I've worked as an auto electrician for a few years before I came to uni and am willing to have a go at anything! I also have a Mk1 campaign sitting in my parents driveway which is my brothers old car, unfortunately it's in a sorry state, the engine has a hole in the block and the car has been sat outside for about 10 years. Annoyingly it might become my donor car as the shell has so much rot from being sat outside for so long.

I'm also trying to work out what to do to strip it back to bare metal, does anyone know how much it would be to have the shell bead blasted? I have been told to avoid shop blasting as it will weaken or distort the panel work as its so thin.

Some of my previous car/s (Current: Audi A3 S-Line DSG 2.0TDi Miltek TBE, Pipercross Panel Filter etc. Previous: Golf Mk4 1.9 GT TDi 115PS Lowered on Eibach Coiliovers, BBS RS2's, Custom Remap, Miltek TBE - Golf Mk4 SE TDi 90PS)

Looks like quite a big project mate, but if you use the Campaign as a donor your sorted for parts!

Are the welded in strut bars tied in to anything behind the bulkhead? If not I'd not fancy being in a smash, they could come popping through into the cab area!

As for the media blasting, have you heard of SPL? They are the ultimate in stripping and dipping shells, quite pricey but much better than blasting: http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/

BTW, that engine in the pics is a 16V.  :D

Thanks for the 16V point out!

No the bars are welded to the backs of the struts one end and the other onto the bulkhead. The bar is mounted onto a 100x50mm piece of plate but I have no idea why someone would do that? I'm going to cut them out anyway.

How much are we talking price wise to have the shell stripped and dipped and why would you do that over blasting?

I'd remove them bars unless you tie them into a full roll cage. I guess someone has perhaps added them with the intention of adding a cage in later.  :dontknow:

I think dipping is about £800, so not cheap but it will completely strip all paint/filler/seam sealer etc including the cavities and box sections. They can then dip the shell to zinc coat it - again covering all the cavities and box sections once you've done all you body repairs. It's the nearest you can get to a brand new shell! It's a big expense but it would be worth it if your putting a lot of money into the rest of the car.  :dontknow:

I have also seen Soda blasting (baking soda medium) which is less harsh on body panels, but I think it's quite time consuming to do (Frosts sell Soda blasting kits).

I'll be keeping an eye on the thread, it looks like a great project!

They're not staying there don't worry! I'm not 100% sure why whoever put them there thought it was a good idea but never mind! Gives me a chance to get my angle grinder out!

Cheers for the recommendation! I spoke to SPL on the phone a while ago and they were helpful, as you say its £795 for shell, 2 doors, tailgate and bonnet. I think that's a little much considering the cars current condition I don't think it needs it. I also spoke to my Dad who used to make a living from restoring MGB's and putting V8's in them and was/still occasionally (when he feel's like it) is a concours Autoglym judge so knows a fair bit about restoring old cars!

Before I start looking into blasting/stripping it down I need to get it to my unit and clean it up! But thank's for the advice so far!

I'll try and get some photos of my brothers car up later on so you can see what it's like! I'm just looking at a photo of the interior and considering when it went off the road it had done 153k miles it is in such good condition!

Exactly what my Dad said, acid leaches out of the seams causing rust that was there to come straight back! He did it once as a test and regretted it! He also said that the acidity made the painting 'pickle' too.

Think I will avoid that!

Here's some pics of my brothers campaign, which hopefully will become my donor car. Mostly everything is there, apart from the steering wheel which someone nicked!

A lot of rot! Not sure on the overall condition of it as we havent been underneath it! But It has two genuine wings and a genuine bonnet which look solid. Totally unmolested and standard apart from the rot! It's a shame really, but whoever painted it when it was last restored made a hash of it and it shows! The engine also put a piston through the head so currently the block resides in the boot lol

A few updates for you all, car has been collected and put into a unit. First I will be stripping it down to the bare shell totally, so need to take the engine out, all the panels off and get busy with a wire brush and sandpaper!

Pics of the car on the trailer at my house getting ready to put into the unit:

Oh forgot to add a few more surprises on collection of the car, someone has fitted a few Mk2 bits to name them a steering column, lump, master and slave cylinder etc and im sure theres more. Someone has also fitted rear discs from somewhere? (mk2 possibly?) and coilovers which I knew about before but they are not Koni as I thought they look like painted JOM I think. They need stripping and sorting out though.

Where is the VIN number stamped into the chassis? The VIN plate is not there anymore…

I also am going to make some roll over stands or perhaps buy some? Any ideas???
