MK1 GTI
Lurked on this forum for a bit, its gave me some invaluable pointers….think ive just bought a MK1 GTI, sale still to go through so wont get too much into detail until that happens and its home in the garage, probably end of the month.
Its an itch ive been dying to scratch for many years after getting rid of an Ford RS many years ago, and the GTI was the only car of choice for me. Investment is the main reason, but i intend to drive the motor when i can and not let it sit doing nothing.
I just thought id say hello now and apologise in advance as im going to be doing your heads in asking stupid questions and leaning on your knowledge and networking.
K regards

Now im guessing this car will be known to someone on this forum, so any background info please get in touch as id really love to hear, perhaps a previous owner here?
The car is in great nick, stacks of provenance…engine is strong and has been well looked after, bodywork is not perfect but in great nick all the same. Underside could do with some work but solid. Some surface rust only in usual places. Dash bulbs need replaced. Saying all that, It really is testament to the previous owners.
Had the car up on the ramps on Sunday for a thorough inspection. It needs 2 lower ball joints and a N/S/F bearing. That`s it really, apart from dash bulbs and rear wiper motor packing in on way home
TSR conversion in late 90`s which i dont think the seller was aware of as he thought the V5 cc size was a mistake…..its noted in the service book, engine refurbed again in 2013.
The pics

a quick wash and hoover, and £1.50 bottle of olive oil took all the external and interior rubbers and trim back to life
in for the ball joints and bearing next week so it`ll be getting a good run about weather permitting as im off for a week, its clearly not been driven much and loved as it should have been for a few years…it is not going to sit in the garage and will get driven when it can…….apart from rain…salted roads and harsh winter weather, which in Aberdeenshire will be until April probably lol

Kept wondering what was different about the wheels, and it's just missing the black rimg around the centre caps, an easy fix.

Paintwork looks really good, is the cloth interior okay? The Petrol (green) cloth is pretty rare I think.

Bit of an issue last night, took it for a run…got back and left it ticking over outside the garage for 5 / 10 minutes and noticed it started to steam / overheat so quickly switched it off. Suspect fan didnt kick in so will check fan / temp switch, perhaps thermostat needs rep;laced…who knows. I dont think its anything serious, just hasnt been driven enough over the years and teething problems i reckon.
Also, old boy from work came in with a box of old Mk1 parts….set of teardrops alloys (scirrocco?) and back bumper with chrome trim on it……….says was in his garage for years…..going to throw them all in the bin….ill have a look through and see what there is……handles / winders trim and bits and bobs……

As for wheel caps, don't think the black rings are separate yours have probably just been sprayed silver - shouldn't be too difficult to mask off and spray satin black.

As as for the teardrop alloys, don't throw them away the MK2 boys might like them as fitted to Golf GTI as well as Scirocco and some Passats.

I know the red cable attaches to the top male terminal of the temp switch from the rad switch cabling, but does the brown wire from the rad pin connect (on left) into the other black connector im holding and then red wire then connects onto the bottom male terminal of the temp switch, or does it connect to the lower male terminal on the temp switch? if so…then where does the red wire connect to on the black connector cable? …lol….does that make sense

Dont want to reconnect until im absolutely sure…i know this is very basic stuff so aplogies
Picture attached

Thanks in advance

Nice
Gotta love weird people giving you boxes of stuff![]()
hahaha…zactly

Ive added some pics of the parts. ill keep a few of the bits for myself but im sure most of its for other Mk1 models.Perhaps some eagle eyed members can identify what they are / for., what i can keep for mine…then for the cost of postage , job lot or collection…or free to those that need them. i have also set of teardrop alloys, id be willing to exchange for a single pirelli 7mm alloy as ive only got a space saver as a spare.
in the middle of house moves so bare with me
cheers Kev

Old Timer

Evening
I bought it from a guy in Darlington. Looks like it's still in good condition. I did a few jobs on it-gear linkage was sloppy, brakes were hopeless with nothing at all at the back.
The P slots were my doing as it was on BBS RAs when I bought it. The refurbers didn't mask the rings on the centre caps up when they resprayed them!
I used to commute 10 miles to work in it on nice days and it only let me down once when the alternator brush pack failed and the battery drained on the way to work. Easy roadside fix by the AA man.
Glad to see the car's still around.
It's been on a bit of a journey as I sold it to a chap in Stourbridge and then I saw it parked outside the VW garage in Reading a year or so later.
