Hello Kyle and welcome to the forum.

There is no quick way to save masses on insurance really it's all down to your age and lack of experience driving really.

When you can I would get the car insured on a classic policy and look into post test courses.

Good luck with the painting.

Hi Kyle and welcome to the site.

Now lets not get too hasty!!! The first thing is these car are NOT getting any cheaper. If you sold yours now you would regret it in a few years. A lot of these cars are investments as well as good fun to have and drive. But they dont come without there running problems but thats part of the fun.

If possable, why dont you get a cheap car and build up your no claims bonus, but keep the Golf. Keep it as an on-going project. Get it painted, sort the bits out that you want to do, but do it over time. Keep it clean, serviced and most importantly, MOT'd.

Dont part with it, time flies by. I know a few people who have parted with theres and cant afford to replace it, wish they hadn't sold it and wish they hadn't left it to rot away.

Post some pictures up, become a paid member, read the advise that people post up and keep us informed of your progress. I guarantee, if you part with it, you will regret it.

Keep the car mate. When you can drive it, you will be so happy you kept it. Worth every penny!  :D

thanks for the replies :) my dads into building cars big time and also said we do our best to keep the car and paint it at a later date .but we thinking about going straight for the classic policy as i know i never be happy with the ka/corsa first car. so will carry on looking for insurance . as for the car it was gold with std brown trim new rear arches runs and drives just needs a full hit .and for the wallet easy sum of £160 genuine 79k miles so at the money we have in the car painted it can offset against the insurance :) dad fetched the car off the retro rides forum for me as a suprise and simply cant bear to part with it :) kyle
have a pic too ….

hey kyle shame you gotta sell but insurance is such a killer on these cars, im coming up 23 and paying £600 (i know its hardy anything compared to yours) but a 2008 bmw 320 will be about £500 or less to insure, the problem is alot of classic car insurers wont touch you til your about 25.

if you really want a mk1 keep an eye out for a smaller engine, they did come in 1.1 and 1.3 but alot of those have had engine swaps now.

or the other option could be a mk1 polo ? engine range on those are 800cc to 1.3, i met someone who had one as a first car so cant cost a bomb to insure??
