My car is a jigsaw!

Hi,

I bought a MK1 cabriolet a few years back, and has just started to get it sorted out.
Previous owner told me that it was born with a 1,6 engine and a 4-speed transmission. Before he bought it, the previous owner had fitted a 1,8 and a 5-speed transmission. The actual car was first registered in September 1983

So, I’m trying to order parts, but it’s proving somewhat difficult due to the mixed race.
According to the VIN (WVWZZZ15ZEK001130) it’s a modelyear 1984 - correct?
On the transmission, FH08012 is stamped at the bottom, which should indicate its build 8th of January 1982 - correct?
I can’t find anything stamped on the engine (where to look?) but on the timing belt cover it’s says it’s a GU engine. As far as I can see, the MK1 cab was never sold with a GU engine?

Engine code is stamped into the engine block just below cyinder 3, you might need to gently rub it/scratch it to reveal it.

It should also be on your log book (if anyone changed it.) and on the sticker in the boot.

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Thanks - I had to remove some rust on the surface to see the "GU" stamp. The sticker in the boot is long gone, together with the logbook.

Anyway to see from the VIN which engine and transmission the car was originally born with?
