Lifters should be standard , valve springs are a bit more tricky as the head may have been machined for dual valve springs , are the valves larger than standard? .

i didnt relise with the head and valves that i was getting:
collets
springs (both inner and outer)
also a plate (valve spring plate??)
please correct me if im wrong but the smaller spring goes inside the larger spring, then the plate goes over the top of the two springs (what way round??) and they are held in by the collets. then what goes ontop of these to make it come in contact with the cam?
sorry if i am being just plane dumb :banghead:  but this is all abit new to me stripping the head n blocks right the way down,
the valves i belive are standerd size they are all brand new and have had the seats recut?? and lapd in.

help would be much appreciated, and also does anyone no a price on the ??lifters??  if this is the things that make the valves come in contact with the cam.

Ok to start with you have:

A lower spring disk: available from vw. (this is a lighter peice than the upper disk - so you'll know the difference)

then your two springs sit on top of this (doesn't matter which way round both have flattened edges)

then your valve goes up the middle

then you have the upper spring disk

the spring compressor is placed on this

the springs are compressed

the collets (two halfs) are place round the top of the valve stem

the compressor is realeased and the collets grip the stem and the upper disk.

Then the tappet/bucket goes on top of the completed valve/spring combo

id check with vw as to the difference in springs between the engines - they will be able to tell with the part numbers etc.

(by the way i would replace the valve stem oil seals if you have the head stripped)

tappets are about 5-6 quid each from euro car parts

I'd get some sort of manual or something that shows you how things are assembled if you've not done this sort of work before.

Shims are still available but getting harder to find.  if you go for hydraulic then you'll need the later oil pump also if you havn't already got it.
