Is is the 1.1 or 1.3 mk1? If so I understand you need to reinforce the structure where the engine will sit but in the 1.6 or 1.8 models it is ok.

I'd imagine the hardest bit would be getting the electrics sorted out especially if it's for a car that wasn't previously injection.

Alot of work but the end result will be great! Wish I could be more help.

I'm sure someone has done a conversion like this on the PVW forums but unfortunately they're dead!

to fit the 16v engine and box

if your mk1 has a 1.3 or smaller engine you will need to remove left hand engine mount and reweld  further along the chassis leg there are a couple of indents where it sits i think it also needs turning 90degrees.you may need the gti front and side bracket ,if your golf is 1500cc it will bolt straight in,just swop mk1 mounts to 16v engine
To use 16v gearbox you will need a pair of 86 on scirocco or golf cabby driveshafts these have 100mm inner cv joints
fueling would have to be a pair of carbs,if you want to run kjet you would need gti fueltank fuellines pump accumulator basicly a donar gti
for the ignition you would need a dizzy from a early seat ibiza i cant rememember what year and model
Also need a conversion exhaust manifold ashley or supersprint

Sorry to hijack on my first post but rather than start another mk1 16v conversion thread i thought id post on here as my question is relevant to whats been posted!

My conversions actually going to be on a mk1 jetta but as such the process is the same as on a mk1 golf.

In the above post it talks about carbs/injection? Im going to run carbs but i thought i needed gti fueltank etc, is it the case that i i wont need to use this as im going carbs? Just run a different pump & lines????

Cheers
Lloyd

You would also need to change the master cylinder and servo or they will foul the dizzy cap :)

Bushy - You only need a GTI tank if you're converting to K-Jet (although you can use your carb tank with a Scirocco/Cabriolet in tank lift pump and of course the main pump and accumulator etc.)

Keep your carb tank for carbs but you will need a Facet fuel pump for twin 40's/45's as they will need more fuel but still at a low pressure which the Facet will do.

I went from 1.3 8v Carb to 1.8 16v K-Jet - the hardest parts to find are the brackets for the fuel pump and accumulator as they are nearly always rotten.

Here's some more info on it with loads of pictures:
