Mk1 16V FAQ update (New weblink and details inside)

The 16V FAQ Zip hasn't been updated for a while, mainly because I did the conversion a fair time ago and haven't really changed much since.   Now the sun is shining the emails/PMs and forum threads on the 16V conversion are ramping up again.

So, I have now decided to start uploading what I have to the net rather than email it out all the time.  On top of the actual FAQ Word file this means I can add other general information I have (images etc) relating to the conversion on an ad-hoc basis without it being fully 'written up'.

The mk1 16V Conversion FAQ Zip is now located at: 16 Valve Guide - The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

The current contents of the Mk1 16V Conversion FAQ Zip file is:
  • Notes on Mk1 16V Conversion.doc : Word Doc compilation of 'FAQ', experiances and Notes on the Mk1 16V conversion, discussing options for aspects of the conversion.
  • Notes on MK1 16V Distributor Options.doc : Word Doc FAQ on mk1 16V Distributer and Cap Options.
  • 6A into Mk1 or Mk2 Conversion Guide.pdf : Two Page pdf guide to converting 6A engines for use in Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs.
  • Mk1 16V Conversion - VW Motoring Article (4 Jpgs): Four Page Mk1 16V Guide/Article from VW Motoring Magazine.
  • CGTI Rabbit Magazine Conversion Article.doc : Word Doc Copy of a Guide to the Mk1 16V conversion from CGTI's Rabbit Magazine.
  • Mk1 16V Conversion - The Golf Q&A (2 Jpgs) : Two Extracts from the 'The Golf' (Now Golf+) magazines Q&A section relating to Mk1 16V Conversions.
  • Image 1 - Mk2 K-Jet 16V ECU and TCI Loom.jpg: Image of a Mk2 K-Jet 16V ECU, TCI and appropriate Loom laid out and labeled.
  • Image 2 - 9A Block with sensors : Image of RHS side of a 9A Block, used to demonstrate sensor positions (See 'Notes').
  • TSR Mk1 16V Conversion Loom Diagram.jpg : Image of TSRs custom loom, for reference.
  • KR 16V ISV Wiring Diagram.jpg : Scan of wiring diagram for the mk2 16V ISV from Haynes Manual.
  • KR 16V ISV Wiring Diagram.pdf : Guide to connections on 16V ISV loom.
    [/list:u]

    New additions (Sub directories):
    • 16V Conversion Manifold Options - Contains images of some of the popular conversion exhaust manifold options
    • Engine and Gearbox Mounts - Contains some ETKA Screen captures of 16V and Mk1 GTI Drivers side end engine block, plus images of the Driver side chassis engine mount for small and large block.
    • Gearboxes and Linkages - Contains images and diagrams of o2a and o2o shift mechanisms (Cable and Rod change respectively) as well as general gearbox images (seals, 90/100mm flanges etc)
    • General 16V Images and Info - Contains images of different pulley setups on 16V engines as well as full copy of the Mk2 Golf Haynes Manual
    • Mk2 16V Wiring (ECU and ISV) - Contains edited (labelled and coloured) extracts of ECU and ISV Wiring diagrams from Haynes as well as images and guide for 16V ISV connection.[/list:u]In some cases I have included Zip files of the directory contents.

Ok so time for a small moan…can people who have actually used the conversion FAQ please give me feedback (ie those that have actually done the conversion).  I have said again and again that it cannot improve or progress without input from other people.  So get in touch with:
      - Any mistakes in the FAQ.
      - What images or details would be of use?
      - What problems did you come across when doing the conversion? (either down to being difficult, or just because the wrong or incomplete info available?)
      - What did you have to work out for yourself (no matter how easy or difficult)
      - Additional solutions to issues already discussed in the FAQ.

You get the general idea, and if you have the answer….tell me so I can add it!  It may be a good idea to do it via this forum section or thread, so other can have input into what need adding.  If the FAQ is of no use,  tell me that as well so I can stop wasting my time!

When I did the conversion 5-6 years ago there was a raft of sound people doing it at a similar time (RubJohnny, PaulC, G60rge etc), all exchanging info and who have all been on the forums helping people since.  But it tends to be the same people helping out, and the complete lack of constructive feedback is making me loose interest tbh.  Shame Paul/Bens FastGolf site disappeared, that was a good guide.

Anyway, I hope it helps somesome at least.   I'm off out to mess around with my MX5…

      Dave

I've been using the conversion guide on and off for 6 months now (slow conversion hey  ?) but the Distributor cap / lead match is baffling the hell out of me, i bought a 90' cap and some new KR leads and the leads came with the M4 type pin fitting, the cap didnt have these so i bought some HT lead crimps and ht lead ends but it was easier said than done, and i hate the fact they are so poor, then i referred to the fiat x19 cap, this doesnt even fit on the distributor, so i decided to stick with the cap that fits but need to source leads without the M$ pin fitting, anyone know what they are from  ??

Strange…with the VW caps you shouldn't need to do any modifications to the leads at all.

I knackered my ABF cap and ended up just using a standard KR/9A cap in the end, it was close but if you blank the front brake M/C output it's not too bad.

I spent half a day at Ignition Car Parts in Basildon who are a trade supplier of dizzy's, leads, caps etc and went through their catalogue with them trying to match up similar parts and put to bed a few internet rumours and made a workable solution and took a few pics to show how i did it. First the rumours…. There are no leads that will fit a KR head that do not have M4 connectors at the dizzy end, so the multitude of caps that exit at 90' that will fit the distributor body are useless, i started with one off a peugot, waste of time and money that was ! The KR and ABF leads have M4 connectors (these fit over a small brass pin in the dizzy cap)  the majority of 'suggested' dizzy caps do not have m4 connectors in them so… Fiat x19

not sure whats happened to my post above, no pics and most of the info is missing ?? :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:hate leaving stuff unfinished, so here we go again….

Fiat X19 (pre 1980) caps don't fit
Peugot caps fit but wrong connectors
Volvo caps wrong connectors

the bit with the pics…

ABF cap showing the M4 connectors

congrats to Tim for having the ugliest thumb nail !!

modifed the cap by cutting off the 'ears' and reshaping the lugs on the side to accept the spring clips at 90' to the dizzy body for retention strength, like they're supposed to be

modifed the Dizzy body to accept the cap around the other way so the leads point away from the bulkhead, this is far better than trimming the lug off the cap itself as it will stop the cap moving under vibration eventually causing the car to run awfull !

Goddamn it i'd love another Mk1, swung by to have a peak at the classifieds to see ho wmuch they go for these days.  Eeek they've gone up loads!

No idea if anyone still uses this FAQ but looks like some of the images etc from the FAQ went missing.  If they are still of use Is there somewhere I can re-upload them to?

A lot of photo's got deleted when Photofucket decided to start charging folks for Hosting.

Some migrated to Imgur, some paid the ransom, and some forgot to relink their postings to the new account while others simply said "EFF-It".

I like this site as it will allow some of my Pbuck links (I have been paying them for years.) or else they will allow me to up-load from my pc…(great as when I pass some of my photos will still show up.).

So you have to choose your poison, as to what photohosting site that you choose or Get your own server and host your own photos there….. :)

Which is what I should of done years ago, but was to busy or sleepy to do…..

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?
