G60 Engine mounts??

With a G60/MK1 are standard engine mounts up to the job? Ive had a MK1 with polyjobs fitted before and would prefer not to go down this route.

With uprated mounts, its more to do with getting better hook up (traction) during agressive starts, than anything else. Flexible mounts are good, because they insulate the rest of the car from the engine vibrations. But when you put a lot of torque through the engine/trans against a reactive force, ie accelerate hard from a standing start in low gears, what happens is the power is no longer smoothed so effectively by the flywheel and the natural smoothing effect of the momentum of the car itself, isn't enough to overcome the 'pulsed' power delivery of the engine due to its intermittent firing over the 4 cylinders.

So basically what happens is the engine mounts flex, and the torque delivered is not continuously smooth but goes up and down (in time with the cylinder firing). This means that at the limit of adhesion of the tyres, they will lose traction on the high torque point, which is a little higher than had it been smoothed by limiting the movement of the drivetrain. So you can't apply as much torque without losing grip. Due to dynamic friction coefficient typically being lower than static friction coefficient, once the tyre loses grip you need to back the power right off, to regain grip. Or another thing that can happen close to the limit is the tyre rapidly loses and regains grip - tyre shake. Tyre shake is potentially damaging in large amounts (ie from high power), its capable of shearing wheel nuts etc and it will also mean the driver's head shakes so much they will lose vision and not be able to see! (temporarily).

Basically, the harder the engine mount the better the acceleration, all else equal.

Another thing to bear in mind is, the stiffer the engine mounts, the less likely you are to damage/crack an exhaust manifold.

Hi i am running cable change mounts from g-werks and they work great in my mk1 golf gti g60 and the engine is cool with it.  But before i ran a mk3 gti golf rod box with standard mounts and that was ok as well .
