I've got a 2l tall block in mine with the DX head, goes well, loads of torque. There are plenty on the scrapyards and if you've got one near you where you can take the parts off yourself they should be cheap. From the articles that I've read the 9A with the 1.8 cams fitted, (I think it is just the inlet you need), is good, plenty of torque and masses of top end power. I'm waiting for one to turn up myself.

2ltr tall block conversion on the MK1 is the simplest route definitely. Have done the same conversion on MK1Turbo's car, running home ported head, kent cam, vernier pulley, ported inlet and exhaust manifold, Audi WUR+Throttle. Goes like a train. Set-up on the rollers produced a heady 148bhp, and bucket loads of torque to match. Only pain should have been the downpipe needing to be lengthened but this was ok and didn;t need doing (perhaps due to aftermarket exhaust). Next step on is to add the Turbo technics kit waiting in the garage

Turbo Technics MK1 Golf GTI's - where are you ?

Hi, The 3A Audi engine should go straight in without manifold / clearance probs. as it's a 'bubble' block rather than the VW tall block. You'll need distributor shim and oil cooler blanking plate from TSR. Trouble is, many Audi's with 3A's have done mega-miles by now but you may get lucky and find a good one. I've heard plenty of people use the Mk3 Gti 2.0 block (or Passat, etc) without problems though
All the best,
Mark

the 1.8T is still way too involved and expensive, I was gona build a 2.0 8v bubble block as i had a grant motosport stage 3 big valve head but unforseen problems forced me to decide against.(the head was fooked)

i have just completed a 2.0 16v 9a conversion and im well happy with that, plus it can be modified further than the 8v and whoops my mechanics G60!

id go with a 16v, but make sure u use a 2.0 9a from a corrado or passat and run it on k-jet with a kr inlet cam… its an easy conversion once u have all the parts,

TIP, try and get the engine from an auto as there would be less chance of it have been rinsed!

cool,thats great guys,

one more question tho been offer a G40 engine what you guys think?????

The G40 is the same as the smaller engine (1100/1300) so would use the smaller engine chassis leg mount (so it would be time to fire up the welder).  As it only makes 113bhp its pretty much exactly the same output as the GTI motor.  Be a worthwhile engine on a Mk1 Driver or 1100n though!

As for what you should fit in yours, drop in a Mk3 GTI 2.0 16 valve motor on Megaspark DIY ignition and twin 45 carbs, it'll go like a rocket, easily make 180bhp and even more with a change of cams and bulleted valve stem seats!!
