CLUTCH PEDAL PROBLEMS.......?

Hi guys,

i was wondering if anyone could give a bit advice on a slight problem that i have with re-fitting my clutch pedal…?

I put the pedal back into position with a the retaining clip on the end, with the clutch cable too. However when i press the pedal down there's not alot of resistance and there's no spring return…? i had a look at my mates mk2 golf which is more or less the exact same apart from there's a spring on the pedal allowing it to do what mine cant..? so i thought i was missing a spring that attatched to the pedal..? i can see theres two small bores at the top of the pedal which i havent used…? can this be for a spring…? i looked at the diagram and read the haynes manual, but couldn't see anything about a spring…? any suggestions…?

cheers sean

What's the cable condition like?  Mine wouldn't return n it was the cable fraying where it comes through the bulkhead…and then it snapped a few miles later!!

the cable condition is almost brand new, the bulkhead has been welded up and is solid. is there anything else that attaches to the pedal apart from the clutch cable…?

The car was bought as a project and most of it was dismantled when i recieved it, wondering if theres any parts missing..? but looking at the haynes diagram i cant see anything…?

I can't remember there being a spring in the pedal as I'm sure the cable tension pulls it back.  Have you got a bight point etc?  There's a white screw thing (god I'm good at descriptions but it should be obvious when you see it) at the actual clutch end that changes your bight point and should give you that resistance and return.  If not…I have no idea!!!  But someone will :)

yeah i'm pretty sure all parts are there, just had another shot at trying it, i think the problem is that because the bulk head has been welded the groove in the rubber seal isn't allowing it to sit properly giving it the same effect as if the bulkhead was cracked! never the less i shall try again tomorow, cheers for the help

The spring return comes from the clutch diaphragm itself.

Can you operate the clutch lever at the gearbox end without any resistance ? If you can then it is likely that the finger on the end of the operating shaft has cracked. The shaft and finger are inside the gearbox, but easily be accessed to check.

cheers for the help and info, managed to sort the problem out. someone before had repaired the area and the wall of the bulkhead was slightly thicker so the rubber wouldn't sit properly. took a while but got their in the end cheers sean
