Anyone used an ecotek valve?

as the title says I was wondering if anyone has used an ecotek valve, as they claim to increase power and improve fuel economy etc.
yet if they were as good as they claim to be i was wondering why everyone doesn't use them.
any comments would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I've not used one - seen people in my village use them on other cars and when I was last spoke to them they were well chuffed with the increase in responsivness and fuel economy. Gen opinion is you'd want the filter otherwise noise can be a little intrusive.

I've been keeping my eye out on ebay for a bargain as the list price seems a little steep to me for such a small and simple valve. However, it does make me wonder, like you say, if they are that good why are so many people getting rid of them on ebay?!!

My brother had one on his (bored out to 1.9) DX engine, and said that he wasn't impressed with it, and that it seemed to be a gimmick - might only be good for standard engines, or maybe it's not that great anyway…

ecotek can be found here:

my view is that they would create little or no benefit.

I've got a used one if someone wants to have a go and try it out.  Yours for ?6.50 incl postage!

I spoke to my brother about something else, and asked him what he now thought of it, having had it on the car for about a year (until a year ago), and he said two things:

It clogs up with oil from the crankcase every few months, and needs cleaning out. (not an issue if your engine is new and unworn, but most Mk1's fall into the worn category)

He reckons that it doesn't make much difference, and points out that where a good accessory is good, and makes a difference, it gets adopted by manufacturers (eg: Hella's Raintronic auto rain sensor is now "built into" many new cars, at all levels, not just prestige models), but where it doesn't make enough difference, it doesn't get adopted (eg: those magnetic "fuel savers" you put onto the fuel lines, or the valve that we're discussing here    )

He reckons that there would be more to be gained from your engine by ensuring that things tlike these are in tip-top condition/adjustment:

Airfilter
Spark plugs
Ignition leads
Distributor cap & rotor arm
Points (if applicable)
Crank/valve timing (if belt-driven)
Accelerator cable (should be adjusted so that "flooring it" actually does equal a fully-open throttle)
Oil level (overfilling causes crank-drag)
Tyre pressures

I had an Ecotek on my mk2 Gti a few years ago. I had problems getting it working properly, so when I had an engine tune the tuner did it for me. I also had an FSE power boost fitted at the same time and the car went like a rocket and was getting 32-34 mpg. Hard to say what the ecotek did…. made a whistle most of the time… personally I`d agree with above and get a good air filter e.t.c first!  :?

Hi my brother works for a tuning company and has tested ecotek valves on a dyno, They make NO power, with a wide open throttle they are doing nothing but can improve throttle responce at lower rpm but that is all, it is basically a spring loaded air leak which if inncorrtectly adjusted can cause the brake servo effect to drop or worse completly disappear.

I have heard that the guy that owns "Ecotech" doesn't even use the valves… If that is true - it speaks volumes!
