16v alternator

Im currently doing a 16v conversion. Its an ABF block with a KR head.
I need an alternator for it and i just wondered if it mattered which alternator i use whether it be one from a KR mk2 or ABF mk3.

Hello mate,i have the abf bottom end and i'm running the mk1 alternator.It has been a while since i did it,but i'm pretty sure(assuming your losing the power steering)you need to replace the power steering bracketry with a kr alternator bracket(drops over the four studs iirc) and it should work and line up nicely.Hope this helps,like i said it's been a while so best to have someone confirm the best route but that's what i did.You'll need the kr long adjustment bar at the top too.Good luck with the conversion mate.

I hope your right because that could save me a bit of money. I have the mk1 alternator on now (loosly) minus the top bracket. But it doesnt look like the pully wheel lines up correctly. I have ordered a top bracket which should be arriving tomorow, so i shal have a go with it tomorow

Hi mate - I ended up using the mk1 alternator on mine - as you said the pulleys dont line up using that bracket, so I cut a slot into my mk1 alternator with a grinder so it goes around the engine bracket at the pulley side, and used a bit of tube as a spacer on the other side.

Also had to use the KR adjuster bar to get the length, but ended up costing nothing and its solid as a rock.  Have been running it for a fortnight now and working well, and still can change back to a mk2 item when one comes along at the right price

This is starting to annoy me now.
I have bought a kr alternator with brackets, they arived yesterday and i tried to fit it this morning. But the main KR alternator bracket doesnt fit. The bolt hole pattern is the same as that on the water pump but it doesnt fit over it.
Any help would be appreciated

Does the bracket need to be spaced off the water pump with some kind of realy thick washers?
What does the alternator bracket bolt onto at the bottom? because whatever it is, I havent got it.

So the alternator bracket is spaced away from the water pump then using nuts

Still dont know how it bolts over the lower bolts on the water pump

I think ive figured it out. But i have to go and buy some nuts and bolts.
Shall hopefully get time to try again today.

I have made progress
I have used threaded bars and used nuts as spacers




The alternator fits fine.
However i have new problem, again. The crank pully wheel doesnt fit because the bolt pattern is different as if it has a greater pcd.
I think the pully wheel i have is from a kr engine so i think i should use one from an ABF engine. I didnt think they would be any different but they must be.
Or could i get away with drilling the holes in the pully wheel?
Ill probably have to wait another week before i can find one of them.

Glad your making progress mate.As for the crank pulley,i'm pretty sure i used the kr pulley,but might of been off the mk1 engine,either way it looks,exactly like yours :dontknow: .Have you tried with the belt off?You using the right holes .

Yes i have tried it with the belt off, and it didnt fit. Hmmm i dont know what to do.

I shall have another look at it tomorow. But now im going to the pub.
