What should I be looking for

Hi all,
I have been looking for a Mk1 tintop that takes my fancy for a while now and one of my friends uncles is maybe selling his. As it is my first time buying a Mk1 and I am certainly no expert with cars I was wondering if anyone could help me with what to look out for? Any certain things that could cause major problems that golf have etc.
