Vinyl paint

Hi,
After installing new leather gaitors around the gear stick and hand break I noticed how wrong the headlining looked.
The interior is light grey check with white under the dash and gear stick surround, and the gaitors are white in colour too.
But after fitting the new gaitors I noticed that the headlining looked grubby.
Its cream, but looks like it has been painted/dyed in the past as there seems to be white patches. I would like to have it in white, so was wondering if anyone out there can recommend a good vinyl dye/paint as opposed to trying some sort of paint remover.
Also is it a big job to remove the headlining.
By the way it's a MK1 GTI Cabriolet (91) so paint will have to be flexible to cope with the folds.
