New member been offered Mk 1 karman 1800 gti 87 advice

Hi to all if you could lend me the collection off your knowlage I would be gratefull
I have been offered the above car its been in  dry storage for 12 years the roof had been removed and lost inc frame  it comes with a mo hair roof and frame but no headlining the  drivers seat is worn and needs sections replaced the body work is in ok condition
I should add that I work in a traditional bodyshop  we have industial sewing machines and the headlining(providing I can get an old one for a pattern) and seat are no worry the asking price is four hundred pounds is this a good price

Thanks Andrew

Doesn't sound overly expensive, if it's solid and the engine is still a runner I'd go for it.

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

So long as the body doesn't need welding and the engine is ok, great value, you can pick up what you need off here.
Hood, frame  but no headliner? You will need to strip the whole lot down.
Headliner 1st
Bag 2nd
Insulation layer 3rd
Hood 4th
If you can find a frame complete with all the above in good condition a simple swap, just check that the frames are compatible. Power hood to power hood, you can put a manuall hood on but it's a lot more tricky the other way round.

A new headliner is about £129.00. I can give you the insulation and bag measurements later on as I am in the process of doing the whole lot on mine.

Ok here are the images  It comes with a hood and frame  just missing the hood handles and head linning it comes with a hood bag if anyone has a old headlining I can use for a pattern I would be greatfull  making a headlining from scratch without a pattern is a pain remaking the seatcovers will be ok if I find a close match material its a dark blue with a red stich running though it I quite happy with my buy as I said I work in a bodyshop so a respray will be in order very little grot on the body

Thanks Andrew

You would have to strip the old frame of it's padding and bag and top, as the headliner goes on first, then bag glued and stapled, next insulation layer and then the bag is closed and glued, next the top is fitted.
