Mk1 Grill History??

Just a quick question about grill's on the Mk1…

Why do some of them have a badge where the grill slats continue behind it and others theres a circular hole in the grill for the vw badge?

Also was it the Gti's which had the black vw badge? and which models had quad lights and which had chrome or red trim?

Maybe a change due to time or models??

Quite a random post but I just got thinking about it so thought I'd prob the wealth of knowledge on here…

On the hard top the GTI had the red grill surround.  The twin lamps were optional across the range but came as standard on the very last hard top GTI's (the Campaigns) the Golf Driver and I think the GX too.  Also many of the soft tops had the twin lamp grills.

I think the chrome surround was on the GL/GLS models.

All of the hard top Mk1's I've had have had the badge "infront of" the slats, where as my late model Cabby GTI has the badge recessed in a hole (well it did till I fitted a single lamp de-badged grill - lol)

4 lamp grill's seem to have the hole behins the badge, these were made by hella so might be why?

My first Mk1, a '85 Cabby had a quad grill with a chrome badge which was the 'slats carry on behind type' with a chrome surround.
I've now got a single lamp with black badge which is the 'hole for badge type' with a chrome surround.

Guessing the chrome surround must be an add-on as the black badge means it was a GTI grill so would have had a red-trim but must have been an early one as is a single lamp type??? … maybe …
