Mk1 golf Rally Car

Hiya All, i toying about making on of my mk1's into a tarmac rally/hill climb car and was just wanting your views as to weather or not you think it would be a good idea.

Just as a thought it wouldnt be any different to a 205/106

Heres why i thought about it

Light
Cheap to reapir
Quick with the right engine i have a 1.8 16v
Easy to reapir by self
Strong
Reliable

Cheers Nick.  :D

I voted no mate as I couldn't imagine seeing a classic wrapped round a tree and another one gone from history!!!  Get a 205 and wrap that round a tree  :y:  ….It would make a good run in the rally with its handling and lack of weight but dont do it mate

take the mk1/vw blinkers off spudfingers!

i reckon a mk1 would be cool, a 205 is a classic as well so…

i say go for it with a mk1, if it doesn't have to be road legal you could always find an MOT failure to race rather than using a minter.

go for it mate :Y:

1983 Polo CL - daily

1984 Golf G60 Syncro - sold

1989 Rallye Golf - sold

1992 Corrado G60 - crushed

1989 Polo C - chopped and crushed

1991 309 Style - crushed

Those are bloody big blinkers… it looks like Van Nistlerooy!!!  I'm still not in favour of any mk1 going on rally's.  The 205 IS a classic and a good motor… that's why I'd take that to a rally and leave the golf in the garage!!

It's opinions and that's mine… with my big blinkers on or not!!

You may find with a 106 or even a 205 being a bit more modern, parts and even whole cars are easier to come by, making it cheaper. I'd say they're not much harder to work on (judging by maintaining my 306 daily).

Having competed myself I would say that the only reason to use the mk1 is your wish to do so. A Nova, Corsa, 205, 106, etc will be more competitive. Yes they are jellymolds, but they have had far more development in every area over the mk1.

I think mk1s look great done up to rally spec but i dunno if i could bring myself to actually rally one!! I get stressed over speed bumps damaging suspension and stone chips so a mk1 going over big lumps would just be scary!! But it looks like it could be really fun too!

Think I'll just keep enjoying my lone position on this fence!!  :D

I don't think I'd rally a golf, or any car for that matter. But that doesn't mean I think you shouldn't. Golf it all the way.

I do want to build a track Mk1 some day though, but I don't think I have the spuds to try rally driving!

the Mk1 rally cars look nice but
a peugeot would be loads cheaper and easier and parts easier to get hold of as loads of people rally them
probably faster too

I think its a good idea. I wouldnt rip a nice example apart though. Maybe one that needs a bit of work and interior etc is past it. I go to rallys all the time and I think I have only ever seen a mk1 compete twice. Whenever theres a car in the entry list that you dont normally see rallying it gives you something else to look forward to seeing and when your spectating you notice the rarer cars get a lot of attention because they are different. It makes it more interesting

Go for it :)
