Is this a Campaign?

Hi,

I've got an '84 MkI GTI, and are wondering it it is a Campaign or not.
I've looked at the check list, there seems to not be any hard and fast criteria…

It has an EW chassis number - WVW ZZZ 17ZEW073166, though, I
think the number has to be greater than 448319, so I may be out of luck…

It does have:
1. A genuine steel 'wind-back' sunroof
2. Tinted glass
3. Spring loaded fuel cap
4. Colour is black
5. It does have fog lamps with the vertical pattern

On the minus side:
1. The 4 button steering wheel doesn't appear to be leather
2. The door lock pins are not the right type - they're the usual mushroom type
3. The P slot wheels long gone, I'm afraid

Can someone give me a definitive answer?

According to legend   IMO,  yes it is.

The number you quote is a 'greater than' number for DW chassis numbers to be included in the edition.  EW is correct year code for campaigns as long as it left the factory as a Gti.  Parts get swapped over the years, so I wouldn't worry too much about the odd missing feature.

The chassis number has to be greater than DW448319, all EW chassis numbers are okay. (D is 1983 year code and E is 1984). The only sure way is to look and find your options code sticker, the code you're looking for is S707.

AFAIK the things you have missing (steering wheel, correct door pins, Pirelli wheels) are items which wouldn't have appeared on a non-Campaign, but of course they're easy enough to put onto a non-Campaign to make it into a "fake" Campaign (or, to put back onto a non-original genuine Campaign).

In fact, EVERY part that's in the list is either not unique to the Campaign; or is easily swapped. So the actual list of items doesn't mean a thing. Neither does the exact chassis number, so long as its over the 448319. The only thing that does, is the sticker/option code. Since VW (I think) have not kept records of the options fitted to each car on a chassis number basis (can anyone confirm this), then you're relying on your own car having this. I suppose sooner or later, someone will produce a fake sticker too LOL.

But non-Campaign GTIs exist, which are greater than the chassis number! Yes, VW shuffled around cars (apparently they had an area in the factory where they stockpiled shells with the steel sunroof) so that the UK received no GTI non-Campaigns in the last stages of production/sale, but apparently some non-Campaigns did make their way into the UK, possibly as a special order? In any case, its arguable that a 1984 non-Campaign but with steel sunroof, tinted glass, leather steering wheel and foglights, would be both genuinely rare and desirable (those 4 options are the ones that actually make a difference, after all) and thus potentially worth even more!

The later door pins are not unique to the Campaign on Mk1s. Hardly a selling point!

Thanks for all the helpful comments guys - I really appreciate it.

Isn't easy, is it?
So, EW chassis number makes it much more likely, but not definite?
You say 84 model year - is this the same as post Aug '83?
(that's what I though EW indicated…)

I'm guessing that it doesn't exist any more, but where would I look for the options code sticker? Engine bay?

Yes.  Sept '83 to Aug '84 = '84 model year.

The options sticker should be in the boot, stuck to the inside of the rear panel.

Or in the inside of the service book if you still have it
