Help with a notchy steering rack

and what are the most common fixes? Is it a new unit or could it just be bushes?

Check the UJ joint at the bottom of the steering column to see if anything is catching on it or if it moves freely.
Check the rubber boots covering the track rods where they screw onto the rack to see if they are split, may be letting dirt into the rack internals.
Check the ball joints at the track rod ends and wishbones to see if they both move freely. If they are worn or lack lubricant then they might make the steering feel funny.
Top mounts also, check they move freely.
Are you experiencing the notchy steering during actual driving or whilst the car is stood still?
