Going off the road!....... (Advice/Help thank you please)

Well I'v managed to get myself a minter of a MK2 GTI 8V  
63K genuine on the clock, and I only payed what it would cost to fill it up twice! (the fact that it came with half a tank is a bonus)
Its MOT runs out on tuesday so I'v gotta get that sorted but other than that I'm pleased as punch!
The car had been in my girlfriends family for a good few years so its been looked after really well.

So once that has passed its MOT (fingers crossed) I'll be driving that.

I'v found a garage I can keep my MK1 over the winter and do some work on it.
I'm not the most mechanically minded person so expect some posts from me asking how to change spark plugs ect..  :roll:

I want to fix up the rust and reseal it, sort the problems with the clutch/gearbox and just tidy it up for the summer.

In my dreams I'd love to do a whole rebuild+engine conversion but in reality I don't really think I'd have the skills but who knows.

I think it's a combination of patience and how willing you are to learn and just picking up things as you try them I've just managed to fix my headgasket and put it all back together etc having never really done something like that before. Bit of help from mates and asking questions on here anythings possible.

Ok well I'v not managed to get the MK2 through its MOT yet, they guy thats going to do it has been really busy and now the MK1 has really given up so I'm refusing to drive it untill its in a drivable condition.

Its parked in a private parking area for our flats so I'm right in saying it can stay there without a tax disc?

My probems are…
1, the tax runs out on the MK2 at the end of the month and I really need to sorn the MK1 asap so that I don't lose another month (whats the latest I can sorn it without they tax running into next month?)
2, the MK2 still doen't have an mot, am I going to get in a shed load of bother if I book it in for the mot and drive it untill the test date if i can come up with some excuse if I get pulled over, eg.. " I'm picking it up from a friends so the mechanic can pick it up from my house"?

I really feel so sad at the moment, when the MK1 is running well its such a lovely car but when it goes wrong its just a nightmare :cry: .
It's had a new clutch this time last year but there is obviously big problems.

Ohh another thing, does anybody know how much a new windscreen would cost from VW?
I can get a new one fitted on my insurance for £75 but if a new one from VW doesn't cost much more then i'll hang on and fit it myself when the car is in a bit better condition.
The combination of this weather and an old stone chip really didn't go down well.
