Coilovers - buying

Where is the cheapest place to get a set of Hottuning coilovers or similar re-branded ones?

Also would anyone be interested in a group buy if it can be arranged?

I got some of ebay for £150 delivered, good quality but are quite stiff unless you want it really low, to be honest i wish i left it standard.

yeh….i here mixed things, but mostly good. I would keep my 40mm g-max setup but I have some wide 13's to go on so I will need to get it fairly low.

im a huge fan of the ta tekhnix ones, tho i have gaz coilovers on my cab and there is a huge difference in ride quality.

I am thinking about buying this set from ebay.  My brother has installed them on a couple of his Rabbits (American, don't bring up the Golf thing) and he says they ride pretty well.  Come out of Belgium, so shipping is expensive for me but maybe not for you.

Hottuning will do them £150 delivered with club discount, think they are the TA's version, the same as the Hottunning just a different badge rite?

that's quite cheap really….I could try to get a bit more off if we can get a group buy going on…

Anyone in? I want to get some early next week.  :D

Hot tuning is just a company, none of the coilovers will come branded as hottuning.

i WOuld higly recommend AP coilies but i will also say that the JOM coilies if your on a budget are very very comfy! alot of guys use them on mk1 and mk2's and improve the ride quality alot! no harshness at all.

JUST REMEMBER!


All coilovers will give you a bad ride if not activated!

most people just buy them out the box and stick em on then complain they are REALLY hard. what ever you buy wont be that bad if you just take them out the box, remove the springs and fully extend and retract the shock 10 - 15 times, this will get all the fluid in the shock moved evenly around you move the air lock from the mid point of the shock giving you a MUCH better ride.


expensive coilovers have a note in the box telling you to do this but on the cheap ones they dont as they sell world wide and are too cheap to change the language :P


so what ever you buy, make sure you do this before using them or you will be one of the people complaining about a bad ride :)

booze and boredom, the greatest mix :)

nice tip. i'll do that if they ever arrive! been waiting 3 weeks now! coming straight from germany. i wanted to have them for edition 38 next weekend :( may have to just cut my springs down so i dont look like im driving a tractor.

i wrote off a mk3 fiesta by doin that lol…

the standard shocks arent built to be lowered too much, if ya do that you will end up with a stiff suspension and loose car lol.. i would just sit on your hands mate lol

they are 40mm lowering springs. only need another 20mm off. it will be fine for sitting in a field, looking good for 3 days :) but tip taken. thankyou very much.

not sure what to do now, on a real budget, I'm not using it as a daily so some TA's should do the job rite? if I activate them and get my mate who runs a garage to dial them after I have fitted them….they should be ok for a couple of years? :dontknow:

I'm runnung ultralite 13x7.5 up front & 13x8 on the back, do smaller wheels make the ride harder or softer (the rubber is not stretched)

yup, what mixer said (beat me to it for a change lmao,) and make sure you lather the threads in copper grease before fitting, and then motorcycle non-fling chainwax liberally all over them!!!! That way they don't seize up.

The ride is shocking down past the 100mm mark as you tend to be using the bump stops more than the springs lol  If you want to go to the bottom you'll need to cut a bit off the bump stops all round.

Make sure you fit good quality new top mounts as well else you'll be taking them off again a few thousand miles later!

you could cover them in chainwax and then use car or motorbike inner tubes, chop them into sections and slide them over the coilovers before fitting (over the thread and coil part) like a protective outer boots on MTB front shocks, fasten them with electrical cable ties top and bottom….they could be slid down if you needed to adjust ride hight, then re-crimp with a new cable tie…it wouldn't look that pimp but it would protect them well….just a passing thought!
