But he is taking £ per BHP so honda is the way to go, honda have so much of the performance tuning market the parts are so so cheap, have seen a 410bhp 1.5 D series civc that had been done for under £1800

And when it all goes wrong its even cheaper, honda D series engines can be picked up for £100-£150 not many 20vt VAG lumps about for that

WHY would you want 350bhp in a mk1? what would be the point? undriveable, beofre you get the power down a standard car would probably be a mile p the road for you to play catch up, it certainly would not handle that power on the road, and the strain on the chassis would mean you will need to seam weld the shell plus roll cage the inside. people have done this but it costs a fortune and will never be reliable!

350 bhp in a fwd 20+ year old car you must be mental  8O  it would need to be converted to 4wd to ruun that power in a mk1

stick to a 20v more than enthough power for a mk1 golf

how can everyone slag off japanese performance engines? the vtec is a very very good engine. bhp/litre is fantastic from the factory. and lets face it, for reliability, they are probably the best in the world.
i do agree with the comments of 350 being an awful lot of power, in a road going car. if it's being built for shows, knock yourself out. if it's a daily driver, forget it.
but hey, it's your time and your money and your car. as long as you have your eyes open and enjoy yourself, it doesn't matter what option you choose. and lets face it, i can have fun in a 1.6 gti with no mods, so i don't need 350 horses to put a smile on my face.

Got to Say high power in Old civics works very well :P not sure how the golf would cope, probably be ok with a few extra welds, all depends on how strong the shell is!

I am Currently (very slowly) building a 400-500bhp ford capri, i dont have any worries about it as the shell is a good one, do it to a rot box and its alll going to go tits up!
