Would suggest HIC, they've been pretty good for me: SPECIALIST MOTOR INSURANCE from HERTS INSURANCE

If you become a full member on here then you can get up to 15% off with companies like Adrian Flux and a couple of others, see here: The Mk1 Golf Owners Club is currently closed

First time insurance is a nightmare to start with but I hope this helps a little!?

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Insurance for young drivers especially blokes is a complete nightmare and a disgrace IMO. Having said there are a few ways to bring the cost down.

1) Join a club like this one and some companies will give you a discount as said above.

2) I don't know if this is still correct but when I started driving I was a named driver on a relatives policy. This brought the price down dramatically.

3) Have a limited mileage policy if you're not going to do many miles a year.

4) Garage it if you can and have an alarm on it.

5) Consider doing a pass plus and or an advanced driving course of some kind. There's loads out there that are recognised which will give another insurance discount.

Hope this helps.

Hey welcome to the club, from what ive read on here £1500 is really cheap for a first time driver in a mk1!

You wont benefit from classic car insurance really, im 23 and the only classic car insurance quote i could get was from footman james and they wanted 900!! i rang up tesco and i think im paying just shy of £500.

Good luck with the search

I think most insurers won't touch drivers under 25 for classic insurance???

Hi,
Feel free to give us a try if you like. If you wanted to PM me your details I'd be more than happy to get one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

Hi, I have a 83' Driver 1.3. I'm 17 and insurance is abit of an issue but I've found that if you join a multicar insurance scheme like admirals and put some of your family members as named drivers. And insure there cars on the same policy, it comes out at a reasonable price, I got quoted £1960 with a limited mileage of 8000 miles per year. But I've heard Adrian flux are quite good and joining the owners club gets you a discount of upto 15%, but haven't tried that yet :)

I also have a MK1 caddy (1.6d), and got quotes of around 1200 (and am 17) through aviva, and HIC. I got denied insurance by adrian flux and others. Oh yeah, and both those quotes were taking into acount the fact it was lowered.
