Mk1 Purchase - Need your help

Post

Gents, im looking to jump back into MK1 ownership after a 10 year break from ownership.

What's the current market like.

I'm thinking of a 83 GTi or Campaign model, I know its a hard thing but could someone give me a few rough market guide prices for both.

What are parts like at the moment, I see VW heritage are still quite well stocked on good repro parts.

Any further buying advice welcome.

Soon to be back!

The market is overblown in the GTi department at the moment, especially campaign versions.

You're likely going to need 10 - 15k for a really nice example, and reasonable projects are now around 5/6k, with basket cases any cheaper.

What to watch out for is corrosion in the roof (particularly sunroofed models, and rear axle mounting areas - these are the most expensive and difficult areas to repair.

Also, poorly repaired or restored ones, particularly in the body shells - I've seen lots of badly done resto's. Take a body guy who knows these cars if you're looking at any, or put pictures of the rust repairs passed a body mans eyes before making a decision, unless you're at the top of the market and can find an unrestored one.

Most parts are easy enough to find or adapt with good support, it's all been done before…

K-jet systems are now getting on a bit and are specialist to recon, hence lots go to bike carbs, or even later 1.8T Vw/Audi engine conversions, in which case it's the electronicals and dash/gauges/wiring which needs to be right.

At the moment Cabrio's are a bargain in comparison at half the value.

My opinions!

Hope this helps, good luck!
