Hello guys need some help, I need to do the passenger side outer cv boot, but how do I get the cv joint off without taking the complete shaft.of the car, I see you have to remove the track rod bolt and the bottom ball joint, undo the 30mm hub nut, I don't want to mess my camber so will undo the top mount so the whole leg drops out, but also is there a way I can put the shaft away from the cvj without removing any of this I know on my mk3 cavalier there was a circlip that I pulled apart and just pulled the shaft out the cvj without undoing the trackrod or bottom ball joint, as there was enough clearance, would this be the same with the golf or will it all.have to come apart cheers sorry if I didn't make much sense lol

You don't effect the Camber by removing the axle.
You don't break the Camber bolts loose.  You either remove the strut assembly off the Lower Ball Joint.

IIRC You can replace the boot on the car.
1. Jack the car up and place on Jack Stands.
2. Remove the 6 8mm triple square bolts that hold the axle to the Differential.
3. Remove the rear part of the axle by removing the c-clip that holds the rear bearing on the shaft.
4. Carefully remove the rear bearing.
5. Cut the outer boot off the bearing.
6. I suggest that you clean the bearing and repack it with cv grease.
7. Slide the new boot on and up the shaft, secure it with the new clip or use a Stainless Steel Wire-tie.
8. Replace the rear boot, and bearing replace the axle on to the differential.
re-torque the bolts to 45Nm, or 33 ft/lbs.

It is also easier to remove the Axle nut. (Once the axle nut is loosed, (or removed) do not move the car, as main wheel bearing preload will be lost and the bearing will be ruined.

And replace the axle as a unit.  Over on this side of the pond you can get new axles for about 75 dollars, and it is a lot less messier and a whole lot easier to replace the whole axle.

I have a good local rebuilder of CV's that warranty them for 3 years and 30000 miles.

When I notice a torn boot, I have the axle rebuilt for about 59 bucks.

I stay away from Rebuilts by CARDONE as I purchased one and it broke within a week, the replacement for the replacement lasted 3 hours and when that one broke it peened my differential so much that it broke the cage, and ruined the Differential, so new tranny was needed.

Either way the removal is easy for the boot, just messy, and if your boot was torn long, then contamination of the grease is likely, and if your axles are groaning or clicking on turns from a stop you would be better served by replacing them.

It is all outlined in the Bentley, however, you don't have to drop the strut, or break the camber bolts to change the axle or the boot.  I find it easier to remove the Brake caliper bracket, and take the lower ball joint Pinch bolt loose and separate the Strut assembly off the ball joint.
