Historic road tax classification

Post

Hi,

My Mk1 just turned 40, so it should now qualify as a historic vehicle i.e., no road tax to pay. According to the DVLA website all I have to do is pop along to my local post office with my log book and MOT and they will sort it out. However, this does not seem to be the case. I have been to 2 post offices and neither were able to do it. They said that they can only change it to a disability class and that I had to send my logbook to the DVLA.
Does anyone have any experience of this and can offer any advice?

Thanks

The car really needs to 41 years old to apply for historic vehicle status and be road tax free. To get no compulsory MOT the engine needs to and original type of engine and no major changes to the car.

Have a read of this.

It's the April after the YEAR it's 40, either registered or built if you can get proof from VW and use that to update the build year with DVLA.

If your car was registered is October 1983 you will be tax exempt in April 2024, then you can go to the post office.

(Note if your car was regsitered Jan -April you still have to wait to the following April)

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The MOT exemption does actually start on the 40th anniversary of the build date, I suppose it gave the DVLA an excuse for numerous meetings and discussions to work this one out.
If your car is registered before the 8th Jan and you don't know the build date they will give you the benefit of the doubt that it must have been built the year before, good of them.

I'd falsify the plates and just drive it personally. 😂

My Chevy has no front plate, and I'm pretty sure I could get away with losing the rear one where I live… I'm fortunate to not have to worry about ulez though, that sucks.

I would never do anything as illegal as that, anyway I can't stop and chat. It's getting dark and I have work to do. Now where did I put my balaclava and bolt cutters.

Look at this website to do it all by post and online, you don't have to go to a post office. I used this info to change the tax category on my RS2000

The link works for me in Firefox, albeit I get the non-https warning flag not to proceed as the addy isn't registered with https but http.

If you have a different browser I would suggest to use that.  On one of my Fiber Routers, I had installed the Company's "Security software", and that was stopping my from going to non-https sites.

So try a different browser, or check your routers security software.

After reaching that site I had a nice trip down memory lane reading about the best car I ever owned the 72 Rover 3500S.

No offense to the Decades of fun I have had with my 81 Rabbit Diesel LS and my Cabriolets.

This exact same thing happened to me yesterday at the post office - couldn't do it they scanned the bar code on my V5c - I took in V112 form too exempt from MoT.

In end I posted off to dvla with change to historic class for the taxation with the V112 and covering letter

See what happens 🤷🏼‍♂️

What date was yours registered or built?

Mine was registered 5 October 1983 so I've been clock watching so that I can put it on road free of tax.

I've had an MOT check done which it passed with a couple of small advisories.

See what DVLA comes back with

Unless you can prove it was built pre Jan 1983 you will be tax free April 2024. Its not on its 40th birthday. See replies and links above.

I'm in the same boat… car's late Sept '83 (so MOT exempt as of a few weeks ago), but I'll have to wait to 1st April next year to become road tax exempt.

Not that it matters, might not even be driving by then as the cars in a thousand bits at the moment!

I can get to the site OK, but it doesn't give any details regarding changing the Tax class. It just says. 'This page doesnt seem to exist. It looks like the link pointing here was faulty…' I tried searching in the search box there but no joy.

Golfy1 please can you try another way to post that info.

Thanks
