Grinding from steering column

Post

Evening all,
Took the car out for a little drive last night and noticed it was making a horrible grinding noise coming from the top of the steering column when turning right or left. I’m assuming it’s the top bearing that has given up as the noise is definitely at the top. No evidence of plastic or bearings that have fallen out of the bottom!

How difficult is it to change this bearing? Is there a guide anywhere? The part is available from ClassicVW so no worries there.
Car is a 1987 DX Gti cabby if that helps.

Cheers:)

You could be correct with the bearing , but I had this issue with mine and I couldn't believe it when I found what was causing the noise. It was the horn contact on the horn ring. It was making an awful scraping noise when I turned the wheel. Take the wheel off, remove the switches and put the wheel back on. See if it stops the noise. If not then you know it's the bearing.
