Engine starts (sometimes) but dies

Engine starting intermittently but cuts out

So….now feeling really stupid, in the hope that I've fixed the problem.  Just discovered that the engine starter electrical connector was part off - can't think of the name of it (see pic).  Clipped it back on and the car is now starting and running well - any my MFA has started working again!

Would still appreciate any help though with the electric windows/wiring thing.

thanks,
Matt

Hi–Last week, while I was driving my '92 Golf Rivage it the engine suddenly died on me.  The AA wasn't able to diagnose or fix the problem (although the chap suggested it might be an electrical or wiring issue). I've since replaced the ignition coil, the leads, the distributor cap and arm and the spark plugs, but still no joy.  It starts sometimes, runs for a short while and then just dies. Most of the time though, it turns over ok but doesn't catch.

The fuel relay is working.

Bizzarely (and this might be unrelated) my electric windows have stopped also working.

Only other thing worth mentioning is that when I got the car it had an after market Apollo immobiliser fitted. That played up a couple of years ago so I disconnected it at the ignition, although the rest of it is still wired in. The car has worked fine since then (up until now). Reason for mentioning is that I have this weird wiring thing (see pic) that I would really like to remove, but I can't really work out what it's doing.

Grateful for any thoughts anyone has!

That is wired into a spare socket.
It looks to be a standard relay.
and the fuse that they are using looks to be plugged in to the turns rear lights.

I would have to tell you to figure out where the switched wires are headed to to find out what that relay powers.

Yep, gotta love those Previous owners and their wonderful mechanics.

Everything I know about electric windows are:
A1 Cabbie Power Window Problems | VW Vortex - Volkswagen Forum

A lot of issues start with plugged rain drains in the scuttle, and water migration into the controller

but there is one fuse at the top of the panel 20A that powers the controller, which is about as good a place to start that I can think of.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
