Clutch stuck

Post

Hi,
I am almost there! My series 1 1980 GTi now runs.
It’s been sleeping in my late fathers garage since 1987.
He purchased it new back in the end of 1979.
Tonight, After spending the last 3 months recommissioning him, I was planning for Wolfgang (yes, I’ve named him) to move under his own power.
BUT the clutch is stuck so I can’t engage gears with the engine running.
It appears that the friction plate must be rusted to the flywheel.
Any suggestions on how to free it?
I know the flywheel and friction plate won’t be in the best of heath now, but would like to be able to now move him.

thanks
Dave

Not the safest way of doing it but I've managed to release the clutch by putting the car in 1st gear and, with the clutch pedal pressed, start the car. Make sure you have plenty of room in front of you as it goes without saying that, with the clutch seized on, you are effectively starting the car in first gear and it will jump/move forward. Hopefully it will free the clutch so you won't move far. If it doesn't release straight away be ready to knock it out of gear and stop the car or kill the ignition. It may take a few goes.

Update on the stuck clutch.
Tried the starting in 1st gear, still stuck, just dragged the rear wheels.
So what I done was to raise the front wheels off the ground,  once engine was warm, started the engine in 3rd gear, obviously the wheels are spinning. Depress the clutch, hold revs at 2500rpm and at the same time apply the foot brake.

Loud pop and now I have a clutch.

Wolfgang now have moved up and down my rear lane after 37 years!

Thanks all for your help.
Dave

Any pics of this golf. Sounds interesting.

I bought a series one gti on 1979 V plate for 35 bucks many years ago - wished I kept it 😄

What a lovely original looking car you have there.
Has it been hard working getting it back on the road?

Maybe start up a project thread…
