Clutch cable

Clutch cable too long

I recently got myself a mk1 tin top with a mk2 gti 16v engine and I'm in the process of trying to sort out any minor faults. When I bought it the clutch pedal would go in about half way before it would start engaging the clutch. It still went in all gears fine but I had to press the pedal hard to the floor. This is with the clutch cable adjusted to remove as much slack as possible.

Because it's a mk2 engine I'm wondering if it's the right cable or if it's just stretched. I read on a guide here that I should use either a standard mk1 cable or a mk1 diesel cable, which I assume would be either part no 172721335H or 172721335J. Is there any significant difference between them as they are different prices, and which one should I get?

In the meantime I have bodged together a simple fix with a hinge that I've clamped and bolted to the cable to artificially shorten the length of the cable which seems to work perfectly.

If I remember correctly, and at my age I might not,  the reason for using a diesel cable is because it exits the bulkhead at an angle, as opposed to the non diesel one, looks neater.
