Nope it doesn't fit earlier bumpers.

The skin is held in place with wedges into clips in the skin.

Put a wanted post up in the wanted section and post in the car breaking section.

Mine rotted away as I found my bumper was lose and banging when driving, I could not find any so I had some made from stainless steel, they are different fitting for the big bumpers compared to the smaller bumpers.
You may be able to buy them now but check they fit a cabriolet with the bigger bumper 1988 onwards.

The bumper skin is held on with wedges along the metal bar (you can see the black wedges in the 2nd picture)and I had a bead of masket along the top between the skin and metal bar which was a real pain to cut through, I used a long bladed craft knife to cut through the masket so I could pull the bumper skin off, I then removed the sticky masket from the bumper metal and did not use anything when putting it back together as you need to remove the bumper skin to get to the bolt to remove the bumper irons.

Not much metal left!

I took what I had left into a metal works and got these made.

Mk1 bumper brackets for smaller bumpers, this type does not fit.

Found these in Germany which will fit, they also stock the other side, they don't seem to sell the bumper bar if you need that as well?
I got away with cleaning and painting mine.

Thank you for that brilliant info, my brackets are ok it's just the beam , yea got it apart ok really it's just the glue that was a pain , front one is stripped and in for a quick sand blast and paint ,so now I'm looking for a donor rear bumper mine is proper dead . So you say you never re-bonded the top of yours when replacing the skin .. does it flap a bit tho ?

I've only done the rear bumper and it's fine and does not flap about or vibrate, I did it about 3 years ago and no problems yet.
