Click click click sound ?

Post

Hello guys need some help, right due to my daily off the road the GTI, is getting used and I picked up on issues, when I drive her it's quiet and no noise, but when it's been driven for 15-20 minutes and she's warmed up I get a click click sound which quietness as I slow down and goes away when stopped, I realise when going straight and left the noise is there but turning right, it goes away, I'm just worried it ain't a fuse or relay or electrical problem, any ideas what it can be ? All help appreciated in advance

Usual suspects ….

Stone caught in and round front brake back plate?
Handbrake cable lose near the rear wheel and catching the tyre?

It's really hard to guess what it might be, is the sound inside or outside the car.

It's quite odd as when it's not warmed up or been driven for Long noise is not there it's only after it's been driven it comes and only when driving on stop it's gone again no matter how hot the car is, the noise seems inside near the fuse box but saying that it could be from behind but the noise goes away if I turn right, left and straight make the noise like click click click,

click click to me sounds as if the CV is flaky, and or the anti-squeal guides are scraping.  The brake shoes can click if worn.  The left right straight tells me that you have something that is in the suspension.

Now with that said, have you replaced your main battery to earth, and earth to engine/transmission cables yet?

You could be having a ground interference issue, as if yours are still original then they are at least 30 years young, and that the fact that they are open stranded Cables are subject to road grime and battery outgassing that effects the current capabilities of the wires…..

Make sure that there are no wires that are rubbing against the steering shaft as well.

Sticking front nearside caliper is my suspect.

Had a sticking rear Caliper on our Mini and was fine when cold, but after few miles made a metallic rattle sound. Was easy to see though as wheel had much more brake dust than the others.

I have a thread about grounds (you call earth) effects and the running of your car.  I will post the link as well as a link to CIS grounds.

I have over 40 years in the Computer Industry, Aircraft as well as Mainframes of old.

Riddle me this?

Hehe thanks briano,   , Il have a look at that, I had a few people mention wheel.bearing, can some remind me how to test wheel bearing, so if the nose goes away when the load it turning right, but back when straight or left, would it be left or right side that has a bearing issue, thanks

Rear bearings when loose or worn usually howl, and increases on turns.

I usually jack the rear and wiggle the tire for play, lots of play then the bearing could be bad, or more common is that the nut isn't tight enough tighten the nut and roll the tyre to see if it still growls, or has lateral play.

When I suspect a bearing failure, I usually do the Bearing, Wheel Cylinder, and rear shoes so I don't have to worry about the rears for a while.  If you haven't replaced the rubber rear brake hoses, now would also be a good time to do that as well.

When replacing the Wheel Cylinders or hose I find that by wrapping the screw threads on the Hose fittings, wheel cylinder side and attachment to the hardlines with Teflon Tape including the bleeder port nipples makes sure that I don't have an issue later when I need to bleed the lines or replace things…. When covering the bleeders with Teflon Tape, be sure that your port is open by pricking a hole in the tape….or uncovering the port.
