Hi everyone my 1983 Golf cabroilet is now tax and mot exempted.

Now my golf is 40 years old can I just go out and drive it out on the roads with insurance or do I have to do anything else to make it road legal and not get pulled by the police.
Thanks for any advice in advance …

When was the reg date?

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I would assume you actually have to register it as historic first

If reg in Aug 1983 take your V5 to a large post office and it should come up on their system as historic, they will take v5 from you and tax your car for £0 and in a few weeks a new v5 will be posted to you

You'll also need a form V112, very simple to complete and downloadable from the DVLA.

Signing it, you'll be declaring your car is eligible to be MOT exempt so read up on the criteria, certain modifications / changes from standard might rule you out and require you to continue to have your car tested.

Even that happens you can still apply for historic / tax free status.

If you're in N. Ireland you'll also need to bring proof of insurance
