To passat or not to passat?

Hi,
   I'm looking for an estate car and was thinking about a passat estate auto. Any recomendations or warnings, or know of any for sale? Just want something cheap and reliable to lug stuff around in, rather than the golf

Why and Auto?  I'd go for a manual diesel.  Always some on e-bay.

i bought one for the engine!

Definately the diesel, my Dad has one and its still going well after 270k.

has he got to 1.6 or 1.9 Diesel?

I'm pretty sure it's a 1.9.

Cheers guys, maybe I will look for a diesel.  Do they do an auto, its just that her indoors has only got an auto license and she'll have to drive it too!

Not sure if they have always done diesel automatics, but you can get them in the relatively later models, see here. Couldn't find any estate's but I only had a quick look. I suppose it depends on what you what you want to pay, I wouldn't count that example as cheap myself (although probably a good enough deal)

Had the same problem exactly !  

GerTIe is now laid up and I needed somefink Estate-ish to carry my model airyplanes in. (Elfie is bit tiny and only for summers) ….and…….missus only drives auto's, so in anticipation of my retirement……

Trouble there is so much stuff under the bonnet ( + Catalytic Converters, etc) that it ain't going to be much fun taking care of it.

I have also heard that I shouldn't be trusting my cam belt much beyond 40k miles.
