rusted inner wing and rear arches!! (pics!!)
is it worth the hassle sorting out the inner wings or should i look for another car…
the cars been off road for sum time now, problem after problem..i did have a fixed for a short period and was enjoyin bombin about town in it (2 weeks) then the sump smashed off and the manifold snapped…
the tax then ran out so its currently sorned.
Today i decided to take all the trim bits off. The rear gti plastic arches didnt need much pulled them off by hand..takin half of the metal/rust with them, next was the wings, drivers side is fine but the passenger inner wing looks like a siv! these are not small eithor with the biggest 1 being the size ov a fist!! 8O
should i look for another and break this 1? :dontknow:

" oh no, theres some rust on my 25 year old car "
lets panic and scrap it - the current classic hot hatch scene as we know it…
good lord man, sit back, look at it, price up the panels and sort it.
and then love every minute of it when you've done it.

low, get a cheap piece of paper, plaster some of your favourite brown stuff on it and stick it to the inner wing over the holes. The MOT fella will smell the odour and keep away and certainly wont be tapping it!!!!
Get it fixed and get back on the road with us!!

It's doable but at end of day will need you to get a MIG and learn to weld or pay someone else to do. Really down to how much cash you can spare at end of day?
Otherwise, look at re-shell if mechanically sound. Do search in For Sale for user 'midweekbeatle' - he's got a VERY solid shell still for sale and could be more cost effective for you?
Cheers

the entire length of the sills
ends of the sills
lift the carpet and felt inside and look at the inner sill/floor join area
right rear seat belt reel mounting point
remove right rear wheel and look up, at the filler neck area
base of the A pillar and scuttle area
These could also be just as rusty. If so, then you're looking at a long time off the road, lots of parts having to come off the car and be stored somewhere, then lots of welding. In short, a restoration.

Low dont be a wuss get it fixed. I think you ol' pal Kins might have to come round with the angle grinder to help! If I were you I'd get sourcing some new inner wings mate. Get your sen a magnet and check the sills and arches if they've been fillered too.
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

I attempted something similar (the rust in your front wings is slightly worse though - but it's nothing a bit of welding can't fix) and my project is coming along ok.
Welding itself is not too hard to pick up (I've been doing it for less than a month) and is a good skill to have in general. Get stuck in - you'll be surprised how much better things seem when you know you can cut the rust out and replace it with decent metal in a short space of time.

Thats the factory applied stone chip paint, quite thick and rubbery. Seems quite durable stuff until water gets behind it and then gets trapped and allows rust to take hold out of sight. Next thing you know it's peeling off exposing a lack of metal 8O .
