All series 2 1.8 Gti's had them, on other words every MK1 Gti with 1.8 engine! 1.6's didn't have it

Cheers

I went to look at an X reg gti the other day that didnt have it, is that right? Matey said it has a 1.8 engine, but it was from an Audi. Could it be that it started life as a 1.6 then?

I don't want to buy a dodgey car.

Yep, sounds like it could have been a 1.6 to start with. I think also the 1.6 Gti's had a red stripe on bumpers (???) but around instrument surround too if this helps?

I can't recall if late X-Reg had 1.8 engine or Y & A Reg only?

Sounds like engine has been changed IMO

Thinking back to the dash, it had square type clocks and they looked like they had been badly fitted - at an angle. Are there any other tell tail signs that I might be able to remember seeing?

No, all mk1 GTIs have black bumpers and I thought the red around the dash was a campaign thing :dontknow:

First GTI to get red stripe bumpers was the mk2 (small bumper models)

Campaign had black surround - i.e. not red or chrome stripe

The red striped instrument panel insert is a '81 1.6 thing along with similar air vents.

Hello.  So was it a customer option to have red vents and dash trim or was it something else?
