Looking for expert mk1 mechanics/ engineers

Hello everyone/ anyone!

I have an '89 1.8 gti karmann cabby which I've had for 12 years. Rarely driven nowadays (due to not needing a daily runabout) and cared for as much as I can. Sails through MOT's with the odd advisory which I get sorted straight away. I've had a full (original colour code) respray, new mohair roof, really looked after the engine as much as indicated from a trusted garage or two but….she's now getting on for 157k and not had anything major overhauled in the engine apart from head gasket and full fuel system replacement (rusty filler neck!!!).

Can anyone point me to a place or person who would be able to spend some time having a good look and recommending anything which may need replacing or would enhance performance, which I would replace with subtle performance parts. For example, I have a pull to the right under hard acceleration and a pull to left under hard braking. Sometimes suspension bottoms out over small lumps in the road. Handling could be better (I think). Tappets very noisy occasionally. I think engine vibration has increased a little. Electrics all still original and I would like these checked out. Random temperature light flashing. Steam coming from heater matrix every now and again. Steering sometimes a little floaty.

To be honest it would be great to start with the engine and exhaust, then move onto suspension. Otherwise its a great car but the garages I use (which are great) don't seem to go to the detailed mark 1 levels which I'm hoping to find. Based in Guildford. Any help much appreciated. I'm in I.T. and useless with oily work so really need to hand my baby over to someone who cares……

Any answers much appreciated.

for the pulling left and right I would be checking the wishbone bushes, bottoming out I would check top mounts firstly, and then springs and shockers,  Those two things will sort out the handling and steering, also check steering rack mounts.

Noisy tappets I would start with a oil flush, before getting into changing them, steam from heater indicates there is a hole somewhere in it or pipework, may only be opening up when its hot hence no water peeing out.

Flashy light could be sender, clocks, or wiring inbetween.

Sorry I aint a bit closer to you or I'd give you a hand, but from a safety point of view, I would be getting the suspension/steering sorted before the engine!
