How much is a '78 1.0 with rusty inner arches worth?

A bloke near me is selling a '78 mk1 golf, its a 1 litre, yellow, 54K and one owner from new. Its got the small rear lights and original metal bumpers (not mint). The car has just failed the MOT on rust in the rear inner arch and sills, its far from mint + has no tax or test. I just want to know what its worth (or if the rust in the arches means don't touch it) so I can make him an offer.

If it needs a full resto it can only be worth a couple of hundred.

Yep, unfortunately this one is the kind of car which is worth more in parts, than together. Its a bit sad to see the little ones (non-GTI) decline in numbers so much, but that's life I'm afraid.

Only if people let it.

The " must have a gti " mentality has a lot to answer for, which is why i've got a driver !!

I've seen this for sale on the bay and in our 'for sale' section. Reckon the car is worth ?50 to anyone who doesn't know anything about the value of chrome bumpers. If he knows the bumpers are rare, I'd say ?200.

Yes, that's partly my point - for this little fella, there's still time for someone to save it and hopefully either restore it or just keep it running and gradually improve it. I think its handy to keep the base models running, to serve as a useful comparison for the (arguably) top model (GTI). And of course even a base model is cute!

Yup, it is the one on ebay.  Can anyone foresee any problems sorting the inner arches?  I've got a couple of mates who are handy with a welder but its something I know nothing about.
I reckon it'd be a shame to break her so I'd like to use her as my daily driver and do her up as and when time and finance permit.
I've recently sold my '91 corrado G60, can't afford another one but want another VW.  I got a (now deceased) mk2 8v Gti but it just doesn't do it for me - this caught my eye and despite the 1.1 engine I'm smitten  :D

Does anyone have a direct link, because I put in "Golf Mk1" and I don't think it came up in the search. I put "Golf" in and 639 entries came up….

I saw that one and wanted it badly (no room though :(). However, if you look closer little bits and pieces are missing (e.g. front bumper end cap), and it looks like it's been bashed around a bit and then filled and sprayed in places (rear arch close up).

If it runs nicely, and you know a welder, you could grab yourself a real bargain I reckon, but I wouldn't pay over ?300 for it. Check the rust on the inner arches isn't too bad, and also have a close look at the sills  before buying too…

As a guide…

I just picked up a S plate (76 manufacture) 1.5GLS, 5 door, good runner, quite tidy - needs a very small bit of welding and a few bits and bobs for the MOT.  Chrome bumpers missing and wing strips.  Otherwise mostly there.

?165 which is on the cheap side.  Yes it was off the 'bay.  Need to put some pics up soon.  :D And no, It won't be for spares :P

Cheers

Only real worry from the pics is the apparent grot on the inner wings and this on one as early has in my experience led to a horror story at the base of the A pillar out of site... there as mentioned is filler boiling unger the rear arch too. inside looks ok too. I would think it is needing two sills both back arches to be sure for starters. A good metal worker would fix the bumpers and rechrome. It would be good to see it rebuilt to standard spec but would cost more than the cars monetary value for the moment by far..
