Advice selling a car

Don't worrie its not my MK1.

I brought a MK2 GTI to use over the winter while my MK1 was off the road but now its back on the road again so I need to sell the one I brought.

Its a stock MK2 GTI 8V 5 door in blue, MOT'd till december but is now sorn.

My question is, would it be a good idea to tax it to sell it or just sell it as sorn? The only problem is that its going to be hard for me to get the money to tax it and also I'd have to insure myself on it again so I could tax it which is going to be more money.

Also I got it from a friend so got it at a very good price but I'm going to need to sell it for as much as I can becuase I'm moving to New Zealand for a year so need every penny I can get. How would I work out how much its worth becuase prices of MK2's are so up and down its really hard to figure out, AND where would be the best place to advertise it, I don't really want to waste too much time with viewing so I was thinking of putting it on Ebay for 2 weeks in an auction and writing please come and view before you bid.

Sorry for the longness but I'v never sold a car before, any help would be great.
Thanks

Its value will depend pretty much on its condition, mileage and history, so it could be worth anything from £500 to several thousand (your description is a bit vague).

Whether or not it's worth taxing it yourself then depends on what it's worth. I don't think I would bother if it means spending money on insurance as that's likely to cost you at least an extra £30 admin fee if you insure and then cancel, plus the tax itself.

As for where to sell it, ebay is great if you're on a deadline as you guarantee it will be sold if you put no reserve on it. Lots of pics and a thorough and honest description are essential. I have bought and sold a few cars on ebay and it's been ok for me. Good idea to advise viewing before bidding as you suggested. You can get a lot of daft questions/idiots too though and you might get a better price advertising it privately (i.e. ebay is better as a last resort choice)

If you know how much you want for it then Pistonheads is pretty good for £15 (good place to look at others to work out the value of yours too). Gumtree is free so also worth posting it there.

Autotrader is £30 but gets a wider audience so it depends how much you want to spend.  I recently sold my Boxster and all of the calls came from the Autotrader ad.

The level of interest you get will depend a bit on where you live too although there's not a lot you can do about that.

Maybe try advertising it for a week and then put it on ebay if it doesn't sell?

Hope this helps and good luck!

I've sold through forum classifieds and pistonheads which i have found best. Just go in to detail about everything and don't leave out any problems, a knowledgeable viewer will notice any issues straight away. Research listings for cars in a similar condition to yours for a guide price.

I bought an 2L 8v oak green 3dr this year with rebuilt engine, average paint with some back end rust for £940 if you want an idea.
