Recommendations for conversion to unleaded fuel please.

I need to convert my two gtis to unleaded as the only garage that sells lrp is stopping that at Christmas.
Anyone have good conversions? The only one I've heard of is something that screws into the fuel line for ?60.
Also, my 1979 gti ran on super unleaded before I bought it.  What, if any, damage did this do to the engine? What will need cleaning, refurbishing to get it better because it is quite noisy at the moment.  It doesn't sound like a gti or anywherew near as good as my 1982 gti.  Is this a rubbish engine (although it pulls ok) or is the fuel a contributor?

Tom, as far a I am aware, all VW's from quite an early date (the 60's??) are ok to run on unleaded without modification - don't think even the valve seats need doing. Can anyone verify this?

Gti's were set-up to run on the old 5 star petrol which was 98 RON which is why your old Gti would have been on super-unleaded (97 RON)

Has been recent discussion on this (I think in the old forum) but Shell Optimax is best option perhaps as when it leaves the refinery it is 101 RON but quickly degrades. Although labelled at 97 Ron i guess it's possible it could be a bit higher?

Hope above helps and anyone feel free to correct me/add to that if I'm wrong!!

Most if not all VW's from 1947 are suitable for unleaded.  Obviously timing needs to be adjusted slightly.
