Can anyone help?

I have a beuatiful VW Golf Clipper Cabriolet automatic - manual choke - E reg with a genuine mileage of on 73,000. My love for the car is waning.. and I wondered if anyone has had a similar problem and can offer advce.

I seem to have a fuel problem. The car cuts out while driving. There is rust on the fuel pipe neck and initially I thought I'd got rust in the tank. Have replaced the tank - a costly exercise - but the problem remains. My friendly but far too busy mechanic then replaced the carberrator filter. He thought this was the problem. This has not resolved the issue.

I'm now losing confidence in the car and although I still love it, am seriously reluctant to drive it!
I've had two other suggestions… is the carberrator icing up? or do I need a new fuel tank?
It's important to say that  have a new fuel pipe neck - but haven't gone down this route yet.  Can anyone help?? :banghead:
