Gearbox conundrum GTi 83

Hi there, I'm getting gearbox ready to send of to restorers. I fitted a new clutch bearing and whilst doing this I remembered that there was a ",shaft," that had literally dropped out when I originally stripped down my car. A few years ago ( finally on the home straight). I think it's called a selector shaft. Any way it won't go through/down where it originally dropped out of.
Will I need to take this to a gearbox place or is there a hack you can share …

I've just checked on Brokevw.com and it looks like it'll need to go to be done by a. gearbox refurb  shop…
