Wipers Not Working!

Hi,

Let me just start by saying hello to everyone and especially DREW, Brilliant Website mate!

I havent posted on here until today, but ive been coming here and reading messages for a while now, and i know its weird, but feels like i already know a few of you already just from your posts! Lol

I just cant get enough of this site… i love it!!! By the way, i got a 1982 Lhasa Green GTI

Anyway, my problems with the wipers, they wont work on any speed setting other than the fastest, intermittent doesnt work either. Any ideas?
Ive been going a bit mad trying to figure the wiring out.. i bought the car like this and cant make sense of it, and also the indicators dont work, i know there have been quite a few posts on this subject already but i still cant work it out! Please help me someone?!! The  dashboard indicator light just stays on but no flashing in both directions. The hazard lights work fine, the stalk switches look fine, fuse box looks fine… ive taken the dashboard out and traced all the wiring but still no joy. Someone please help me???

Overall it sounds like a stalk/switch problem, but you could try the following:

First choice would be to swap the relay with a new one or check  first by borrowing someone elses and plugging it in.

Another problem could be that  wipers are very prone to seizing. It may be a good idea to have a look/listen to the wiper motor when you turn them on as it may be that they are seized. My ones gradually got slower and slower until they stopped completely, but after taking them off the car and stripping them down soaking in wd40 and re-greasing the shafts they are now back up and running. It may be that they are only working on the fastest setting because this is when the motor is working its hardest and is just able to power them.

It might be the relay, because when i first got the car, the rear wiper wasnt working either. Found some old relays lying in the door pockets, after fitting one of them the rear wiper now works! , so maybe someones been messing with them.

…..that brings me onto my next question… anyone got a picture or a diagram of how the fusebox should look… like where there should be a relay or not?

Dubboy, is the above diag also applicable to '87 Cab GTI ???

I am not so familiar with the late Cabs, but if I had to guess I would say they were slightly different to account for the electric window relay. Does yours have 3 or 4 rows for relays?

Anyone got any diagrams of an 83 fusebox (1.8gti a reg campaign). Mine looks different to the 82!

Check you have 12V at the blue/grey wire on the cluster connector.
