Speedo dead.

HI, New to the site and ownership of a 89 GTI! Only got the car last night and driving to work this morning the speedo stopped working, checked the cable and all seems fine, tried taking the clocks out but gave up before i broke something. Any ideas? Thanks

First and foremost welcome to the Mk1 Owners club :D I'm not sure why the speedo has stopped working, although i know that this is purley mechanical so my guess is that it has broken somewhere down the line. Could someone confirm this? Would be best to change this. Here is a how to in removing your dash insert.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the how to, As far as i know the speedo cable in the car is brand new pretty much & certainly looks like new so i dont think its the cable. Thought it may of come un connected at either end but seems ok as well?

if its new, perhaps whoever fitted it didnt clip it to speed properly, or didnt fit the gear end to box properly

Ill have to get the dials out and check the connections in the back, if it seems secure then could it be the speedo itself? Can it be repared if so?
Ive tried to push the cable through from the engine bay and pushing it down into the gear box at the other end but no joy, im guessing that you would need to discontect and re-connect to be 100% sure

Not really, its mechanical. You'd need to disconnect the speedo cable to take the dials out, so…….just check it in place. If its secure, then check the gearbox end. If that seems okay, then go ahead take out the dials, then get an assistant to spin one of the front wheels while you look at the cable to see if the inner drive is turning.

Speedo can be rebuilt if needs be but its fiddly, and you might have worn parts in there.
