Rear Speaker options . .

Does anyone know if i could get a set of 6x9's in the back where the standard 6X4s go? it seems there's a little space to play with there, but i'm not sure.
The reason i ask is that i could do with some new speakers and as 6x4s are quite rare now they are way more expensive than 6x9s and are obviously gonna be quieter. ideas welcome!

You'll struggle to get 6x9 in the parcel shelf supports but anything's possible  :D

I used fibreglass to buld two enclosures to hold 6x9's that sit either side of the boot and use a bumper bolt, seat belt bolt and shelf screw to secure.  I have my amp attched to one so that they can all be removed with little hassle  :D

Infinity do some 6x4's that are supposed to be quite good if you want to keep things looking "stock". About 40 quid a pair. I bought 4 a month or two agao which are currently waiting to be fitted along with a new head unit.

Lets face it in standard form the golf is not exactly a hifi buffs ideal listening environment   , so unless you are going for serious power and sound proofing spending a lot probably ain't worth it imho  :D

sound is one thing i can definately give advice on!!! (at last i feel wanted   :D ) the parcel shelf itself i doubt very much will be able to hold the 6x9's, when i tried cutting mine in the shelf just fell apart, even if urs doesnt and u manage to put em on, i doubt very much it will be able to support approx 300watts of sound. i simply took the measurements and built one out of mdf, easier than fibreglass, got some clips and ther u go, it now supports 800w 6x9s :-)

Can back you up on that, I brought some for the front of my cabriolet, and they do sound OK as long as you not after masses of bass or anything. You get a really clear sound from them, 10x better than the standard ones anyway.

thanks for the tips . Might look into making myself an mdf shelf , Fit some 6x9s then cover it with some black material .

Yeah, the only problem with the shelf is the extra weight on the supports. The squeaking of the supports can be a pain to stop!

I wrote a massive thing on how to build a stealth shelf along with some lessons learned in the old forum, not sure how to go about finding it?

The old forum is still available for searching - just use the FAQ link under "Tools" menu on the left on this page.

Pretty sure there is a link to the old forum there. As I say you can't post or edit, but the search fundtion still works fine.

Found some stuff, but not pete's original shelth shelf thread sadly. Am thinking about what to do at the moment, as my head dosent have any pre-outs so amps wont happen unless i change it . . . hmmm .

Might just replace the orig pioneer 6x4s with something modern. Sounds like the infinity ref's are a good replacement, might look into those.

I can rate the Infinity 6 x 4's as replacement items for the door speakers and Infinity 4 x 4's for the rears in a Cabriolet. I re-wired the rears to get a proper balance and the sound over all is good. Its not a thumping bass but it does…lets face it if the sounds are too high, how can you enjoy all those rattles, squeeks and other noises that we all love the Mk1 for!!

Alpine do 6x4 for about ?40 a pair, I've got four in mine and they sound pretty good, now if I could just stop the surround rattling when the base gets heavy…..

Thanks Peter, sounds like a good solution. Good idea to sit it on your house hifi to check for buzzing etc. I'll do that. Good idea to protect the bottom for shopping etc in the boot. You should be a designer! (maybe you are:))
I think rather than the sandwhich, i might just get one sheet of mdf and cut , mesh, then carpet that. I'll have to check the sides the shelf sit on are in good nick too.

Jon & Dano, cheers, think i'll gofor 6x9s as i have no speakers in the front. I have flat door panels with no pods on. Might try to fit a single in the front central speaker area (even though i've read about the issues with this).

Thanks all.
